HPD response to misleading reports

03/31/2014

Honolulu police officers have never been allowed and will never be allowed to have sex with prostitutes. The department is committed to enforcing prostitution laws and keeping our streets safe. The department maintains careful oversight of all prostitution cases. We have strict written guidelines that our officers must adhere to, and those officers who do not are subject to investigation.

The current exemption in the Hawaii law (HRS Section 712-1200), is necessary so our officers can conduct prostitution investigations, without allowing alleged suspects to continue their illegal activity and evade our operations.

Our undercover officers go through hours of training and work closely with various community groups including the Hawaii Coalition Against Human Trafficking.
