HONOLULU — The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) will celebrate the graduation of 37 recruits from its 220th recruit class on July 31, including 33 men and four women.

The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at Moanalua High School and will be livestreamed on HPD’s YouTube channel.

“These officers represent the future of the department,” said Honolulu Police Chief David Lazar. “Their dedication and commitment to serving our community will help shape the next generation of leaders as we continue building a culture of service, accountability and excellence.”

As one class prepares to graduate, another has already begun training at Ke Kula Makaʻi, HPD’s police academy. Earlier this month, the department welcomed its 222nd recruit class. The class of 66 recruits, including 59 men and seven women, reflects continued growth in recruitment as HPD strengthens its hiring efforts. The class is scheduled to graduate in January 2027.

“Seeing our recruitment numbers trend upward is encouraging for both HPD and the communities we serve,” said Maj. Matthew Kurihara, head of HPD’s Human Resources Division. “Our goal is to build on that momentum by modernizing recruitment strategies and streamlining the hiring process. We look forward to welcoming more qualified applicants who are committed to making a positive difference in our community.”

HPD also recently celebrated the graduation of a lateral police officer from the Little Rock Police Department. The lateral program features an accelerated curriculum for officers with prior law enforcement training, focusing on HPD policies, operational tactics and community policing practices.
