HONOLULU – The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) will celebrate the graduation of its 217th recruit class and welcome its largest new class in recent years.
The 217th class will graduate on Friday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Moanalua High School Performing Arts Center. The class began with 23 recruits and is graduating with 21, including 17 men and four women. The ceremony can be viewed live via HPD’s YouTube page here.
“We’re always proud of our recruits who make it all the way through the program,” said Interim Deputy Chief Aaron Takasaki-Young. “That means we’re putting the right people in the right place. They understand the responsibility of being an officer and take it seriously.”
In addition to the 217th recruit class, two lateral transfers from the Kaua‘i and Alaska police departments also graduated on Monday, Oct. 20. They completed a shortened version of the curriculum due to their prior experience in police work.
As the 217th class prepares to move on, HPD’s 219th recruit class began training Monday, Oct. 20, at the academy.
The 219th class includes 40 recruits, the largest starting number since the 218th class. It includes 37 men and three women, as well as three recruits from HPD’s Police Services Officer program (formerly known as the cadet program), three recruits from the SkillBridge program and one recruit from the City and County of Honolulu’s Po‘okela program.
“We’re excited to see the initiatives we began in 2024, along with more recent improvements we’ve made, showing a positive impact on recruitment,” said Major Parker Bode, head of HPD’s Human Resources Division. “These programs give individuals multiple paths into HPD while providing the guidance necessary to help shape them into outstanding officers, ready to serve and protect with aloha.”
The 219th recruit class is scheduled to graduate in May 2026.
