HONOLULU – The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) announced today it is beginning to explore the implementation of high-tech tools, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to increase efficiency in internal processes, such as report writing.
HPD values accuracy, transparency and accountability. Exploring responsible, carefully tested AI tools from various vendors can improve efficiency and consistency in documentation while retaining the integrity of evidence processing.
“We’d like to conduct a pilot at this point, and not a full deployment,” said Interim Police Chief Rade Vanic. “Leadership means confronting difficult questions—not avoiding them. The conversation around AI and law enforcement isn’t going away, and we can choose to lead that conversation with integrity.”
Chief Vanic emphasized that HPD’s goal is to provide officers with the best tools while ensuring the community receives the highest standards of service.
In the case of report writing, HPD noted the process will require human input and review every step of the way. This process will not replace officers’ judgment or accountability. It will support their work with tools that reduce human error, streamline repetitive tasks, and ultimately give them more time to focus on public safety and community engagement.
“Any new technology must be vetted thoroughly, with public input, clear accountability protocols, and a competitive review process,” Vanic said. “We’ve informed the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney about this and invited them to work with us to ensure our goals are aligned, and to collaborate on this process.”
If all initial testing is completed in time, the pilot project could launch as early as Spring 2026.
