HONOLULU — The Honolulu Police Department is reminding residents that community safety is a shared responsibility and that they can take simple, everyday precautions to significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
“Any act of violent crime in our city is unacceptable, and we understand the concern incidents like robbery create in our community,” said Lt. Kelvin Hayakawa of the HPD Criminal Investigation Division’s Robbery Detail. “The Honolulu Police Department is designating significant resources to crime prevention, investigations, and visible enforcement to deter criminal activity and hold offenders accountable.”
HPD shares the following tips that residents can regularly use to protect themselves, their property and their loved ones:
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings. Keep your head up and avoid distractions. Whether you’re alone or in a group setting, it is important to stay alert.
- Trust Your Instincts. If you see something suspicious, say something. You can report unusual activity by calling 911.
- Use Good Safety Habits When Out in Public. If you are walking at night, going to your vehicle, or waiting at a bus stop, try to stay in well-lit areas and, when possible, travel in groups rather than alone.
- Be Mindful When Parking Your Vehicle. Park in well-lit areas whenever possible. Avoid isolated locations, always lock your doors and keep your valuables out of sight.
- Observe, Remember and Report. If you are ever a victim of or a witness to a crime, you play a key role. As much as possible, take note of what’s happening and look for memorable details of the suspect, weapon or vehicle used in the incident.
- Protect Your Personal Property. Avoid openly displaying valuables and cash in public areas, as these can attract opportunistic criminals.
HPD encourages victims and witnesses to share any information by calling 911 or CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300.
“Your safety starts with awareness,” said Hayakawa. “We urge everyone to take proactive steps to protect themselves, their ʻohana, and their neighbors.”
