The Honolulu Police Department (HPD), in partnership with the Department of Law Enforcement (DLE), will host a gun buyback event on Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, at the Waiʻanae Police Station. The event offers residents a safe and anonymous way to dispose of unwanted firearms, reducing the risk of gun-related violence in local neighborhoods.
This initiative is part of HPD’s broader efforts to create safer communities by proactively addressing the presence of unsecured weapons in homes. By working with residents, the department hopes to prevent future harm while promoting responsible ownership.
All firearms must be unloaded, secured in a container and kept in the trunk. Ammunition will not be accepted. No identification is required, and no questions will be asked during the collection process.
Participants will receive gift cards in exchange for each firearm:
- $100 gift cards: Handguns, rifles, shotguns, bump stocks and Glock switches
- $200 gift cards: Automatic firearms, semi-automatic rifles and ghost guns
Individuals may turn in as many firearms as they wish but will be limited to receiving a total maximum of three gift cards. Licensed gun dealers and active or retired law enforcement members are not eligible to participate.
According to state law, collected firearms will be safely destroyed by DLE, ensuring the firearms do not return to circulation.
The department continues to focus on building trust and strengthening relationships through open communication and shared responsibility. By partnering with community members on events like this, HPD reaffirms its dedication to serving with purpose.
