The Honolulu Police Department’s (HPD), investigation into the Chinatown acid attack remains active and ongoing. Details may change as new information emerges.
On Friday, Aug. 8, 2025, at about 11:40 p.m., a 30-year-old man had just picked up food to take to his business when an unidentified male suspect approached him on the sidewalk. After asking the victim a few questions, the suspect suddenly threw an unknown liquid on the individual.
The victim returned across the street to his workplace, where coworkers called 911. Emergency Medical Services transported him to a nearby hospital. HPD officers initiated an assault investigation. Testing by the Honolulu Fire Department confirmed the substance was sulfuric acid.
The suspect is described as an African American male, approximately 6 feet tall, in his 20s to 30s, with a slim build. He was last seen wearing a long-sleeved blue hooded dry-fit shirt, black pants, and black athletic shoes. He was carrying a black backpack, wearing black-framed glasses, and holding a red or maroon Hydro Flask.
“Policing works best with the community by our side. We ask the public to remain vigilant, stay aware of your surroundings, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
