Over the weekend, the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), in partnership with the Hawaiʻi Department of Law Enforcement (DLE), collected 83 firearms, five of which were unregistered ghost guns. HPD and DLE also collected 11 replica guns.
Funding support provided by DLE. HPD distributed 79 gift cards, each valued at $100.
Firearms confirmed to have been stolen are traced to their rightful owners, who are contacted, and the items may be returned. Unregistered firearms such as ghost guns and replica guns are destroyed.
The goal of the event is to reduce the risk of gun-related violence and accidental injuries by removing unwanted or unsecured firearms from homes across the island. To encourage participation, the collection process was conducted with complete anonymity.
For those who were unable to attend, HPD urges residents to report concerns about illegal firearms or unsafe storage through CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300 or the P3 Tips app. Information about future buyback events will be shared at HonoluluPD.org.
