CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) would like to remind the public to be cautious this holiday season.
Residents are urged to protect themselves from “porch pirates” — thieves who steal packages outside of homes. The HPD has received multiple reports of packages being stolen from front doors shortly after they are delivered.
Here are some safety tips:
When ordering items online, give specific delivery instructions (e.g. leave the item at a particular location, in a delivery box, storage room, etc.).
Consider having a package held at the delivery facility and pick it up in person.
Sign up for delivery tracking to monitor when the package is out for delivery.
Invest in a security camera or doorbell camera to see when the package is delivered. Cameras are also a good visual deterrent for thieves.
Ask neighbors to be on the lookout for your package if you won’t be home. If you see suspicious people or vehicles in your neighborhood, call police. Also, pay attention to vehicles that appear to be following delivery trucks.
Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300. The public may now send anonymous web tips to www.honolulucrimestoppers.org or via the P3 Tips App.
