CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department want to warn the public about a phone scam that is occurring.
There have been several cases where the complainants have received a phone call from someone purporting themselves to be a University of Southern California Campus Police Officer. This person has been telling the complainants that their child, who are actually USC students, were involved in an accident and that money needs to be sent via Venmo or Cash App. Some of the complainants believed the caller and sent money.
If you receive this type of call, please hang up. Contact your child to verify if they are ok. No legitimate law enforcement agency will ever contact you to collect payment over the phone or via an app.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300. The public may now send anonymous web tips to www.honolulucrimestoppers.org or via the P3 Tips app.
