The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) is urging drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and all road users to take extra precautions after Oʻahu recorded its 54th traffic fatality of the year.
Interim Chief of Police Rade Vanic expressed condolences to the family and community impacted by the tragedy and emphasized the need for collective responsibility in preventing further loss of life.
“Every life lost on our roads is one too many,” Vanic said. “Traffic safety is not just the responsibility of law enforcement—it is a shared kuleana. Whether you are behind the wheel, walking, or riding, each of us plays a role in making sure everyone gets home safely.”
HPD reminds the public that small, consistent actions can make a lifesaving difference.
Safety Reminders for All Road Users:
- Drivers: Slow down, avoid distractions and never drive under the influence. Yield to pedestrians and bicyclists.
- Pedestrians: Use crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers and stay alert when crossing streets.
- Bicyclists: Wear visible clothing, follow traffic laws and use designated bike lanes whenever possible.
- Everyone: Practice patience, share the road respectfully and look out for one another.
HPD continues to enforce traffic safety laws and partner with the community to reduce collisions and fatalities. The department urges the public to remember to drive with aloha for safer roads, together to protect lives.
