Caller ID spoofing is when scammers fake a phone number to look like it’s from a trusted source — like your bank, a government agency, or even a local business — to trick you into giving personal information, financial details, money, or gift cards.

Tips to help you:

• Don’t trust the display. Numbers can be faked.
• Hang up, call back. Use the official number from the company’s website.
• Never share personal or financial information over an unexpected call.
• Never send cash or forward payments using gift cards.
• Report it! File a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
• Lost money? File an online police report with HPD.
