HPD Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in the McCully Area

May 4, 2026

HONOLULU— The Honolulu Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on May 4, 2026 in the McCully area.

There is no threat to the public, and there were no fatalities during this incident.

On April 11, 2026, a 2012 silver Mazda 3 was reported stolen from the Waipio area. Subsequent investigation identified that same vehicle as being involved in a Burglary in the First Degree that occurred on April 30, 2026, in the Salt Lake area.

Today, May 4, 2026, at approximately 2:45 p.m., plain clothes officers observed the stolen Mazda in the area of Ward Avenue and South King Street.

After losing sight of the vehicle, additional units were notified and began searching the surrounding area.

At approximately 3:52 p.m., officers located the vehicle in a parking lot on Kapi‘olani Boulevard. As officers attempted to make contact, the suspect vehicle rammed an unmarked police vehicle and an unoccupied parked vehicle multiple times.

During this encounter, one officer discharged his firearm, striking the front seat passenger of the suspect vehicle. The vehicle subsequently came to a stop, and both occupants were taken into custody.

An officer was injured during the incident and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The driver, a 19-year-old male, was arrested on multiple charges, including Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle in the First Degree, three counts of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, Criminal Property Damage and Resisting Arrest.

The passenger, an 18-year-old male, was arrested for Unauthorized Entry into a Motor Vehicle in the Second Degree.

The passenger sustained a gunshot wound to his lower extremity and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The driver was not injured but was taken for medical clearance prior to processing.

The officer who discharged his weapon has four years of service and will be offered administrative leave and peer support as per HPD’s protocol.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or CrimeStoppers.
