HPD West Oʻahu Enforcement Targets Illegal E-Dirt Bikes, Advances Traffic Safety Efforts

January 29, 2026

The Honolulu Police Department’s District 8 support units are continuing focused enforcement operations in the ʻEwa and Kapolei areas targeting illegal e-dirt bike activity as part of HPD’s broader traffic safety initiative aimed at reducing crashes and injuries.

During multiple operations this month, officers recovered 14 e-dirt bikes and issued 20 citations to both adults and juveniles for violations involving illegal operation and roadway use.

“These enforcement efforts are centered on safety,” said District 8 Captain Marino Carreira. “Many electric dirt bikes are not street-legal and can reach dangerously high speeds, creating serious risks for riders, pedestrians, and motorists. We urge families and riders to understand the law and choose compliant e-bikes that meet state requirements and can be properly registered.”

HPD will continue enforcement and education efforts across Oʻahu to promote safe riding practices, legal compliance, and safer roadways for the community.
