HONOLULU — In recognition of National Crime Prevention Month, the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) is encouraging the community to take proactive steps to help deter crime and strengthen public safety.
Observed every October since 1984, National Crime Prevention Month was established to raise awareness about crime prevention and to encourage communities to work together to reduce crime.
Throughout October, and year-round, HPD works with neighborhood boards, schools and community leaders to promote crime prevention strategies and resources. Community Policing Teams will host workshops and outreach events across the island to share prevention tools and connect with residents. Officers share practical tips with residents on topics such as home and vehicle security, protecting personal information and online safety.
“Every one of us has a role in preventing crime. Our officers can patrol and respond, but lasting safety comes when neighbors look out for one another and stay engaged,” said Interim Police Chief Rade Vanic. “Together, we can build safer communities for our families.”
Across Oʻahu, illegal drugs, assault, harassment, and property crimes such as burglaries and auto thefts remain among the most reported offenses, making community awareness especially important. Last year, HPD responded to more than 1,600 burglaries and 10,000 theft cases, many of which could have been prevented with simple security steps.
HPD’s approach to crime prevention is shaped by accountability to the public, transparency in sharing information and partnerships with those we serve. The department encourages residents to get involved by:
- Joining or forming a Neighborhood Security Watch group
- Staying alert to suspicious activity and reporting it to 911
- Locking doors and windows, removing valuables from vehicles and using good lighting around homes
- Talking with family members about online safety and digital awareness
