Citizens Police Academy
The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) is accepting applications for its popular Citizens Police Academy (CPA) through Monday, December 2, 2013. The program will begin in early February and run through mid-April. Classes are held every Thursday evening at the Alapai headquarters and on two Saturdays at the police academy in Waipahu.
Application forms are available online at www.honolulupd.org. (Any applications turned in prior to the current open application period must be resubmitted for the upcoming class.)
Applicants must pass a background check prior to selection.
The CPA is an 11-week program that was created to promote understanding and public-police interaction by educating citizens about HPD policies and operations, the criminal justice system, and ways to prevent and reduce crime. Topics covered include criminal investigation, evidence recovery, narcotics, SWAT, firearms training, and police vehicle operation.
The HPD held its first CPA classes in 1994. Since then more than 500 citizens from throughout the community have completed the program.
