Male Stands on Ledge

This past Saturday at about 5:05 pm a 42 yr. old male was going to be interviewed at a residence on Kuakini St. regarding a crime that happened early in the day. When asked for identification, the suspect grabbed a pair of scissors and then proceeded to shatter a louvered window then climb out onto the ledge. The male proceeded to injure himself, and held the scissors to his chest threatening to harm himself.

Attempts were made to establish a rapport with the suspect who appeared unstable. Because of the location of the suspect and the handling of the scissors HPD officers on scene were careful not to aggravate or increase the already precarious situation the suspect put himself in.

The HPD Crisis Negotiation Team responded, and attempted to connect with the male. At approximately 9:55 pm, the suspect removed himself from the ledge and was treated for his injuries. He was transported via EMS with police escort to a hospital for observation. No weapons were deployed, no others were injured, and evacuated occupants of the building were allowed to return to their units.
