Honolulu Marathon Advisory


Special traffic controls will be in effect from Downtown to Niu Valley/East Honolulu areas for the Honolulu Marathon on Dec. 10, 2017.

Beginning at 12:30 am one or more lanes will be closed and/or coned until the athletes complete each section of the course. Roadways will open as the athletes clear the area. Tow-Away Zones are in effect from 1 am - 5 pm Sunday.

The Marathon route runs along Ala Moana Blvd, to Nimitz Hwy, right onto Nuuanu Ave, right onto King St, right onto Kapiolani Blvd, right onto Piikoi St, left onto Ala Moana Blvd, right onto Kalakaua Ave, left onto Monsarrat Ave, right onto Paki Ave, left onto Diamond Head Rd, right onto 18th Ave, right onto Kilauea Ave, right onto Waialae Ave, to the H-1 Fwy (eastbound), to Kalanianaole Hwy (all lanes makai/ocean side), left onto Hawaii Kai Dr, right onto Keahole St, right turn back to Kalanianaole Hwy (westbound), left onto Kealaolu Ave, right onto Kahala Ave, to Diamond Head Rd, left onto Kalakaua Ave to the finish line at Kapiolani Park.

The following roadways will be closed or restricted on Sunday, Dec. 10: 18th Ave from Diamond Head Rd to Kilauea Ave until runners clear the area. Traffic will be detoured at Diamond Head Rd and Makapuu Ave. Local traffic only access to Diamond Head Crater by Civil Defense, FAA, and Ntnl Guard personnel.

Ala Moana Blvd from Atkinson Dr to Ward Ave will be detoured from 12:30 am to 4:30 am preparing for the 5 am start. Ala Moana Blvd/Nimitz Hwy from Ward Ave to Nuuanu Ave from 2:30 am. Koko Head-bound traffic will be detoured left to Smith St. Use Vineyard Blvd as a detour route.

Diamond Head Rd, Kahala and Kealaolu Avenues will be controlled by police when the volume of runners would interfere with the safe movement of vehicles and runners.

Hawaii Kai Dr makai lanes from Kalanianaole Hwy to Keahole St from about 2:30 am until the area is clear. The mauka-side lanes will be contra-flowed for two-way traffic.

H-1 Fwy in both directions from the Waialae Ave off-ramp/22nd Avenue to Ainakoa Ave. H-1 traffic will be detoured from 3:30 am until 2 pm.

Kahala Towers, Kahala Hotel and Resort, and Waialae Country Club traffic will be permitted via Aukai Ave and Pueo St when safe.

Kalakaua Ave will be detoured left onto Kuhio Ave from 3:30 am. Kalakaua Ave mauka-side between Monsarrat Ave and Poni Moi Rd from 4:30 am until completion. The makai lanes will be contra-flowed for two-way traffic at about 9 am. Limited to resident traffic only; patrons of the Outrigger Canoe Club and Elks Club must enter via Kapahulu Ave.

Kalanianaole Hwy from Ainakoa St to Hawaii Kai Dr makai-side will have restricted access from 2:30 am. The mauka-side of the highway will be contra-flowed for two-way traffic. West-bound Kalanianaole Hwy traffic will be detoured onto Ainakoa St to Malia St to Kilauea Ave.

Kalanianaole Hwy will be closed to through traffic from Hawaii Kai Dr to Keahole St from about 3:30 am until the area is clear. Traffic will be detoured onto Hawaii Kai Dr via Kawaihae to Lunalilo Home Rd. Maunalua Bay boat ramp traffic must enter from the Koko Head end.

Kapahulu Ave makai-bound will be closed at Kuhio Ave at 1:30 am Local traffic will be allowed after 9 am.

Kapiolani Blvd in both direction from King St to Piikoi St at 2:30 am Ewa-bound traffic will be detoured to Piikoi St.

Keahole St makai-bound lanes from about 2:30 am until the area is clear. Traffic will be contra-flowed in the mauka-bound lanes for two-way flow. Entrance and exit from the Hawaii Kai Shopping Ctr, Costco, etc. will be permitted.

Kealaolu Ave from Waialae Ave to Kahala Ave from about 5:30 a.m. until the area is clear. Local Traffic may be permitted, only by direction of officers, at Aukai Ave.

Kilauea Ave from 18th Ave to Waialae Ave, all east-bound lanes will be closed at 4 a.m. until runners clear the area. West-bound lanes will be contra-flowed to permit two-way traffic. Vehicular traffic exiting the lower Kahala area must cross Kilauea Ave at Hunakai St. Expect delays until 11 am.

King St from Nuunau Ave to Kapiolani Blvd from 2:30 am. Traffic will be detoured at Smith St.

Monsarrat Ave from Kalakaua Ave to Paki Ave from 4:30 am until event over (limited to tour buses). No Parking Tow-Away Zone, both sides of Monsarrat Ave from Kalakaua Ave to Paki Ave. Paki Ave from Monsarrat Ave to Kalakaua Ave from 4:30 am for the duration of the marathon. Local traffic only access to Diamond Head Tennis Courts from 9 am.

Piikoi St in both directions from Kapiolani Blvd to Ala Moana Blvd from 2:30 am.

Some bus routes will be canceled and/or detoured. Bus riders may call TheBus or visit the Oahu Transit Services website for details.
