Ask HPD: Telephone Scams

Question: How can I report a possible telephone scam?

Answer: You can report suspected telephone scams to HPD by calling 911. An officer will then be sent to your location to assist you. You can also visit any of our police stations to file a report.

Question: How can I protect myself from telephone scams?

Answer: Scams are constantly evolving, so it’s important to stay vigilant. Never give personal information over the phone or make payments to people you are not familiar with. Take common sense precautions when speaking to someone you don’t know on the phone. Catch problems early by reviewing your phone bill as soon as you get it. And if you get a call from someone offering you a prize or a deal that sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Question: What should I do if I think I’m the victim of identity theft?

Answer: If you believe you are the victim of a scam, please report it to police. When the officer arrives, provide him or her with as much information as possible, including documents from your bank and/or credit agencies. Criminals are looking for every opportunity to steal your personal information, so it’s important to keep track of your purchases. For more information on identity theft, visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website: www.identitytheft.gov.
