Man shot after threatening officer

03/08/2013

HPD on-duty officers were sent to an argument call at a home on Machado Street in Kalihi around 11:00 this morning. When the HPD officer arrived, he saw a male arguing with family members in the front yard. The man, 35, appeared agitated and was armed with a sharp metal stake, about one-foot long, partially wrapped in a cloth. The man immediately headed toward the officer's vehicle and threatened the officer. The man raised the weapon overhead and was within a few feet of the officer. The HPD officer immediately got out of the vehicle, drew his weapon and fired, striking the suspect multiple times in the upper body. The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The suspect has seven convictions, including six felony convictions. The HPD officer involved in this incident has 21 years of service and is assigned to District 5 (Kalihi). As standard procedure, he will be placed on administrative leave. In addition to the criminal investigation, HPD's Professional Standard Office has also opened an internal administrative investigation to ensure that department procedures were followed.
