The Deputies Scholarship Awards

The Deputies, an organization of business and
community leaders, provides financial assistance
to eligible police officers who are candidates
for undergraduate or graduate degrees in law
enforcement related studies. This program shall
operate in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this directive.

ELIGIBILITY

Officers (i.e., personnel in metropolitan police
classifications) of the Honolulu Police Department
(HPD) who have passed their initial probation may apply for the award.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

A. Three $500 scholarships will be awarded
each year (one per semester and summer session).

B. Scholarships will be granted on a semester
-by-semester basis; recipients must reapply
for assistance each semester.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

A. The Deputies scholarship awards are
intended to give financial assistance to
undergraduate and graduate students.

B. The following material must be forwarded
to the Awards Committee through its chair, the
commander of the Community Affairs Division (CAD):

l. A completed scholarship application form
(available from the CAD); and

2. A personal letter from the applicant presenting
the following information:

a. Reason for the need for financial aid;

b. Academic interest and its applicability to law enforcement;

c. Extracurricular interests and activities; and

d. Financial statement.

C. Applicants must show proof of acceptance
from an accredited university or college.

D. Applicants must have official transcripts
of any prior college work sent to the Awards Committee.

E. Application Deadlines

l. Spring semester: November l5 of the previous year

2. Summer session: March l5 of the same year

3. Fall semester: June l5 of the same year
SEMESTER EVALUATION

Each recipient of The Deputies scholarship
shall submit a transcript at the completion
of each semester for evaluation by the Awards
Committee. To qualify for continued support,
a 2.00 grade point average (on a four point
grading system) or its equivalent must be maintained.

SELECTION BOARD

The selection board for The Deputies scholarship
awards will be comprised of members of the Awards
Committee for the HPD. Recommendations of the
Awards Committee will be forwarded to the Chief
of Police. The decision of the Chief of Police will be final.
