Investigative Awareness Training

Training in investigative awareness will be offered
to officers who strive to promote the goals and ideals
of the department. The program will give officers the opportunity to:

I. Gain insight into follow-up investigations and
the completion of felony cases;

II. Actively participate in the daily operations of
the Criminal Investigation Division (CID);

III. Acquire advanced investigative skills; and

IV. Become familiar with other segments of the criminal justice system.

SELECTION AND PARTICIPATION OF OFFICERS

A. The training program is primarily for patrol
sergeants and corporals. However, Metropolitan Police
Officers-Motorized (MPO M) may participate. In addition,
sergeants and below from nonpatrol elements are encouraged to participate.

B. Nominations for candidacy for the program will
be made by an officer’s divisional command. Two officers
from each patrol bureau shall be selected.

C. Officers selected will participate for 120 days,
during which period they will be assigned to vacant detective
and sergeant positions of the CID or the officer’s command.

DUTIES

Program participants will assume the duties of a
detective and handle current cases. They will be
assigned to the first, second, or third watch of
the CID’s Major Crimes Detail. The CID commander
will be responsible for monitoring all program assignments.

COMPENSATION

A. Officers will temporarily be assigned to
vacant detective or vacant sergeant (PO 11) positions
of the CID or the officer’s command during the program
period and be compensated accordingly.

B. Car allowances will not be altered for officers
while participating in the investigative awareness program.

ATTIRE

Officers participating in the program will wear
appropriate street clothes that meet departmental requirements.
