Clandestine Laboratory Response Team

The Honolulu Police Department Clandestine Laboratory Response Team (CLRT) is assigned to the Narcotics/Vice Division.

It was organized in 1996 in response to a new threat to our community.

Previously, illicit drugs were smuggled into the State of Hawaii. A new trend sweeping across the United States is the manufacturing of illicit drugs through the Clandestine Drug Laboratory.

Many of the people manufacturing illicit drugs have no formal education in the area of chemistry thereby creating dangerous situations.

WHAT DOES THE HPD CLANDESTINE LABORATORY RESPONSE TEAM DO?

The Honolulu Police Department’s Clandestine Drug Laboratory Response Team is made up of officers of the Narcotics/Vice Division. The team members investigate reports of suspected clandestine drug laboratories and follow leads of chemical precursors being used in the illicit manufacture of illegal drugs.

The CLRT pursued 97 complaints during 2000 and identified eight clandestine laboratories. The team made six arrests, seized almost 15 ounces of liquid methamphetamine with a street value of $18,750, and seized over two ounces of crystal methamphetamine valued at $7,3000.

Members of the team also give community informational lectures about clandestine drug laboratories.
