FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 22, 2008
The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) is reminding motorists that impaired driver checkpoints will be conducted during the Memorial Day weekend and continue throughout the summer until Labor Day Weekend. The checkpoints will be set up at unannounced times and locations from Friday, May 23, until Tuesday, September 2.
Traditionally Memorial Day weekend kicks off a dangerous period for motorists when more people are attending graduation parties, wedding receptions, and other celebrations where alcohol is served.
As of May 20, 2008, 16 people have been killed in traffic collisions on Oahu this year. Alcohol was a factor in at least 4 of those collisions. There were 34 people killed during the same time period last year.
The HPD and the state Department of Transportation will continue its successful partnership in the federal "52/12" sobriety checkpoint program. From October 1, 2007, through September 30, 2008 police will conduct at least one sobriety checkpoint every week during the 12-month period.
The HPD urges motorists to stay safe, don't drink and drive.
