Ask HPD: Safety Check Stickers

Question: Does a safety check sticker have to be placed on a vehicle's bumper?

Answer: Traditionally, safety check stickers are placed on the right rear bumper. According to Title 19 Hawaii Administrative Rules, there are other appropriate areas where the sticker can be placed. For example, drivers can affix the sticker to a special bracket installed under the right portion or center of the rear bumper. The sticker can also be placed on a bracket attached to the rear license plate in an upright position, so that it can be clearly viewed by a person who is 50 feet behind the vehicle. The rear window or the face of the license plate is not an appropriate place.
