Ask HPD: Background Checks

Question: Does the Honolulu Police Department provide individuals with Criminal History Checks or Police Clearance Letters?

Answer: The Honolulu Police Department does not perform criminal history checks for the general public. These records are also referred to as police abstracts, police certificates, or police clearances. Criminal history checks are issued by the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center (HCJDC) located at 465 South King Street, Room 201.

Criminal history checks may be obtained online, in person, or through the mail.

Instant criminal history checks may be obtained via eCrim at ecrim.ehawaii.gov. There are fees for each search and for each certified eCrim report listing any convictions or indicating no match.

Public Access Terminals located at the HCJDC and at the main county police stations on Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii Island may be used. There is a fee for each printout from the public access terminals.

Written requests may be mailed to the HCJDC, along with your payment of $30. Payments are accepted only in money orders or cashier's checks and should be made payable to: State of Hawaii Director of Finance.

More information on fees, or other topics, may be found online at ag.hawaii.gov/hcjdc. You can also contact the HCJDC by phone at (808) 587-3279.
