Ask HPD: Burglar Alarms

Q: "What can be done by the public to prevent false burglar alarms?"

A. Many homes and businesses have burglar alarms to help keep valuables and property safe. However, we have seen that 98 percent of the alarms officers respond to turn out to be false, making these officers unavailable for other legitimate calls for service.
Here are few things you can do to help cut down on false alarms.

If you have accidentally set off your alarm, call your alarm company immediately to cancel. Do not call 911. The alarm company will call police to cancel the alarm.

Make sure everyone who has a key to access the home or building is trained to use the alarm system and know the codes to arm and disarm the alarm.

Lastly, malfunctioning alarms are the biggest problem. If you experience repeated alarm malfunctions please call your alarm installer and have it inspected or repaired.
