Ask HPD: Modified mopeds and loud mufflers

Q. Is there a law regarding modified mopeds, and how loud can they can be?

A. Yes, there are restrictions on engine and muffler modifications made to a moped. They have to be authorized by the manufacturer and the engine power cannot be increased by more than two horsepower. Those who violate the engine modifications can be fined up to $500.

The noise coming from a moped is regulated by the muffler system. Generally, no modifications can be made to the muffler system that increases or amplifies the noise above the original muffler sound level. Those violating this law can be fined $72.
