Ask HPD: Witness

Q. How do you describe a good witness?

A. Crimes are frequently solved with solid information from witnesses. A good witness is observant to details. For example, good witnesses focus on the criminal's characteristics like gender, height, weight, and eye and hair color. They are observant if the suspect has scars, tattoos, piercings, even moles. They also take note of the suspect's clothing, their voice, accent, and mannerisms.

Having a good description of the weapon used is also important. If a suspect flees from the scene, pay attention to the direction the suspect headed, and if it was on foot or some other mode of flight. If vehicles were involved, get the color and description. It's also good to get the vehicle's license plate number. A good witness is someone that is cooperative with investigators and is willing to testify in court.
