Ask HPD: Changing lanes on the freeway

07/09/2014

Q. If I was driving on the far right lane of the freeway and made my way to the far left lane without stopping in each lane, would I be cited?

A. The law requires that a lane change be made safely, even when crossing multiple lanes. If a vehicle is driven in a careless manner and causes a collision, injury, or damage the driver can be fined up to $500 or face up to 30 days in jail for inattention to driving. When making lane changes please ensure that the lanes are clear, and that your movement does not endanger other vehicles on the road.
