SELECTION VALUES

The Human Resources Division’s “selection values” of prospective employees are guided by the Honolulu Police Department’s Mission Statement and the principles of Integrity, Respect, and Fairness.

Integrity

We have Integrity and adhere to the highest moral and ethical standards. The applicant must be honest and sincere in dealing with others and the community. This is reflective from the moment he or she decides to fill out the candidate’s application. Anyone who misstates, misrepresents, or omits relevant information on any portion of the selection process (including the personal history questionnaire, interview, psychological, polygraph and medical screening documents) may be evaluated as not representing the Honolulu Police Department’s principles and, therefore, not selected for employment. It would benefit the applicant to be candid from the start and provide explanations where needed rather than misstate, misrepresent, or omit information.

We are often required to testify in the court proceedings and must be credible as witnesses. An applicant’s history of unlawful activity and repeated offenses indicates a lack of sound judgment and may not be considered a credible witness by the court.

Respect

We show Respect by cherishing and protecting the rights, liberties, and freedom of all. We interact daily with our community and fellow employees, and temper our interpersonal conduct and treatment of all people with kindness, tolerance, and dignity. An applicant who commits acts of violence demonstrates a lack of respect for the rights of others; while an unstable driving record, work history, education experience, or financial situation may reflect an aversion to authority and lack of responsibility. Self-respect includes refraining from illegal activities involving prostitution, gambling, drug use, and unlawful use of prescribed controlled substances.

Fairness

We act with Fairness because our community expects us to respond to difficult situations and to address each one with objectivity regardless of the circumstances or persons involved. The applicant must demonstrate sensitivity in dealing with people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds while maintaining impartiality and professionalism.

We understand that everyone makes errors in judgment or mistakes from time to time. Therefore, we evaluate each applicant based on the “totality of the circumstances” (history, past behavior, etc.) to determine stability and suitability for employment with the Honolulu Police Department. Suitability includes the potential to provide quality service to the community we serve.
