1 Repetition Maximum Bench Press
PURPOSE
This test measures upper body muscular strength. This test is recommended as part of the public safety fitness assessment battery.

EQUIPMENT
Universal Gym DVR Bench Press machine. Free weights may be used if necessary.
PROCEDURES
- Adjust the weight load to 68% of the participant's body weight.
- Participants lie back on the bench with feet flat on the floor. The feet must remain flat on the floor throughout the lift. The back must remain flat on the bench (no arching) throughout the lift.
- Bar should be positioned across the participant's nipple line.
- Hands should grip the bar at slightly wider than shoulder width.
- The hands must be in a "True Grip" position (fingers wrapped around the bar).
- Press the bar up to a soft-lock position.
- Lower the weights.
- The score for this test is the maximum number of pounds lifted in one repetition.
- Warming up with a lighter weight is allowed.
