The Honolulu Police Department was formally established in 1932. Honolulu is located on the island of Oahu and is also the capitol city of the State of Hawaii.
The department’s jurisdiction is the City and County of Honolulu encompassing the entire island of Oahu. The island of Oahu has a circumference of about 137 miles and an area of approximately 596 square miles. The estimated population of the island of Oahu is about 900,700 this total includes military personnel but excludes our tourist population.
The Honolulu Police Department is comprised of 28 divisions and elements and as of January 2011 the department has 1959 sworn officers and 479 civilian personnel.

The headquarters for the Honolulu Police Department is located at 801 South Beretania Street near downtown Honolulu. For police operations, the island of Oahu is divided into eight patrol districts. District stations are located in Kalihi, Pearl City, Kapolei, Wahiawa, and Kaneohe. Police substations are located in Waianae, Kailua, Kahuku, Waikiki and Chinatown.
HPD is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
