Scam Community Alert Message System (SCAMS)
Each year the Honolulu Police Department receives numerous complaints from people who have lost hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars in a scam or fraudulent scheme. While most scams have been around for decades, others are new and use state-of-the-art technology. Regardless of the method, scams can wreak havoc with a person’s finances.
The purpose of SCAMS is to inform and educate the public so that less people fall prey to seemingly legitimate business offers.
When presented with an “unbelievable” or “once in a lifetime” offer, pay careful attention and closely exam the information that is being provided. Always ask questions before sending money or providing personal/confidential information to the requestor.
Pyramid schemes and other “get rich quick” scams appear from time to time, leaving innocent victims in their wake.
Here are actual scams that have been detected in Honolulu.
