INTERNET SAFETY

Don't talk to strangers, how often have we heard this from our parents, and how often have we said this to our children? Do our children listen? Maybe in the real world. However, on the Internet parents and children think they're safe. We think that no physical harm can come to us. We think that we can be anonymous and no one knows who we really are. Well, explain how children can be assaulted in their own home by a so-called "buddy" they had met online. So as parents what can we do to protect our loved ones and ourselves while ensuring our safety online?

Online predator at the computer First we must realize that the Internet is not as safe as it appears. It's filled with predators, those that would harm our children if given the opportunity. Teaching our children to be STREET SMART in cyberspace is as important as it is in the real world. Following are some simple tips that will help children have a much safer journey through cyberspace.

 

INTERNET SAFETY TIPS

  • Don't give your password to anyone, even your best friend.
  • Never tell anyone your home address, telephone number,or school name.
  • If someone says something that makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, don't respond, tell your parents.
  • Never say you will meet someone in person without asking your parents permission.
  • Always tell your parents about any online threats or bad language.
  • Don't accept things from strangers (email, web page addresses).
  • Never email pictures or anything of a personal nature to strangers. (Some adults pretend to be children on the Web) Remember, because the person says they are your age, doesn't make it true.
